Students in Mrs. Kim Smith's Art Class at Memorial Drive Elementary School have been busy learning about elements of art. In an effort to celebrate their hard work, Mrs. Smith has developed an "Artist of the Month" program. One student is chosen from each grade level for each month throughout the school year; students earn the recognittion by conveying great artistic merit, demonstrating a true understanding of instructions, and giving their best effort in the process. Award recipients receive a mounted copy of their artwork alongside a certificate, a favor bag full of sweets, and a golden paintbrush.
Mrs. Smith and Principal Dr. Shawn Benefield are shown with the inagural group of Artists of the Month. Kindergarten and first grade students created a paper mobile made up of three geometric shapes, colored in layers, and glued on a string to replicate the art style of famous painter, Wassily Kandinsky. Second and third grade students produced colored paper mosaics conformed to their chosen shape in whichever design they wanted, and fourth and fifth grade students painted overlapping geometric shapes using acrylic paint.
Congratulations to these artists!
